Here’s a glimpse of how we put our commitment to creation justice in action

In April 2023, our congregation committed to becoming a Creation Justice Church within the United Church of Christ (UCC). We affirmed that caring for our planet and environmental justice is a core element of FCC.

Learn more about UCC’s long history of commitment to creation justice.

Our Creation Justice Covenant (excerpt):

“We affirm that caring for creation is fundamental to our faith. We love our home, the earth, and we believe we are blessed with the responsibility of caring for the planet. We also believe this responsibility is inseparable from our relationship with God, each other, and all living things. In caring for the earth, we mean to create healthy and safe communities for our families and neighbors.”  Read the full covenant here.

Join us as we build community through our shared passion for creation justice and supporting climate action through worship, learning, “greening” our lives and encouraging others to do the same, restoring our spirits in nature, and supporting efforts to make our church home more sustainable.

We generally meet the 2nd Sunday of the month, after worship, in the library. All are welcome…we’d love to embrace your ideas and knowledge, hear your concerns, share your hope and grow our “green” family of faith together.

In the best FCC tradition, let’s draw the circle wide!

Prayer & Worship

For the 2025 Lent season, the Green Team has created a daily calendar --

Forty Days of Creation Care: A Spiritual Practice for Lent.

Every week we pray for the planet, our neighbors far and wide, and pledge to take “action to protect our planet”.  We gather for Wild Church, an outdoor worship experience that includes readings (examples have included Hildegard von Bingen, St. Francis and an American Parks Ranger), silence and sharing.

Learning together. Sharing information and resources.

We have hosted discussions on books, podcasts and films including What If We Get It Right: Visions of Climate Futures by Dr. Ayana Elizabeth Johnson and The Biggest Little Farm, an inspiring film about restoring a barren piece of land into a thriving organic farm.

We offered tips on reducing our trash, especially food waste, in a presentation about where our Montclair area trash goes when it goes “away” (Answer: Newark Ironbound incinerator).

A workshop on aligning our money with our values inspired us to consider moving our money away from banks that fund fossil fuels (oil, gas, coal). Check out these tip sheets on green living: Minimizing Food Waste and Green Grocery Shopping.

Outings and Adventures

We strengthen our connections with each other, restore our spirits and have fun by connecting with nature through hikes, rafting, walks. Have an idea for an outing? Let us know! greenteam@fccmtc.com

Supporting creation justice and climate action in the wider community

FCC is a founding member of Interfaith Climate Action, a local group of 16 congregations.

In support of climate action, we have testified at legislative hearings, organized postcard campaigns and marched in Montclair, Newark, Trenton and Washington DC. Our current campaign is supporting the NJ Climate Superfund bill, aka Make Polluters Pay. Let us know if you’d like to get involved. greenteam@fccmtc.com

Making our church home more sustainable

Along with Faith in Action Ministry and the Children's Education Ministry, a reusable water bottle campaign encourages the congregation to ditch single use plastic. Order yours through the church office admin@fccmtc.com

We installed two compost bins in the FCC parking lot for use by our community.

We helped with planting the Olmsted Garden in FCC’s front lawn to create a community green space, and with planting a pollinator garden.

If you’d like to be involved in our ongoing effort to “green” our coffee hour, we’d love your help! greenteam@fccmtc.com
